Molly the Cat

Just now, Molly avoided injury (albeit narrowly) in a fairly spectacular display of clumsiness. As far as I could tell, she was just sitting quietly and normally on the back of the couch, looking out the living-room window. This is a popular seat for both Molly and Twinkie; they tend to take turns perching during the day. So there was Molly. She was lucky to get the spot. Unfortunately, she was never so lucky to be blessed with grace and/or balance. And for some reason, she suddenly toppled over, her hind legs slipping down behind the couch. I heard a strangled sort of meow, and her paws scrambled to grab hold of something. Something! She really did not want to hit the floor — never mind that it was only 20 inches below — because her dignity is of course at stake. Well, the story ends happily. Molly’s claws caught the wooden back of the couch, hung suspended for a moment, and finally was able to drag herself up again. She looked shaken and relieved, and she refused to make eye contact with me as I chuckled.

I gave her the crumbs of my breakfast. That made her feel quite a bit better.
